The exhibition Possible Tomorrows, curated by Biofaction, a program partner of the Vienna Design Week, shows a selection of technical and experimental design applications, which abstract from biotechnology and synthetic biology. Microbial Cellulose Fabric 1.0

First experiments showed that it is possible to use different kinds of nutrients for a Kombucha medium such as kitchen scraps like potato peels or used coffee grounds and many more. More tests will show the different characteristics (qualities) different compounds will yield. Experiments also include composite materials.

Ein Projekt der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien, dem Pavillon 35 Biokunst Club und dem Institut für Polycinease

Dass weder die Wissenschaft noch die Kunst die Welt je vollständig erklären werden können, ist beiden ebenso gemeinsam, wie die irratio-nal leidenschaftliche Weigerung, dies zu akzeptieren. Nur das Erlebnis des Scheiterns an diesem Bestreben war und ist vielleicht für manche Wissenschafter, die der Illusion der Rationalität der Wahrheit erlegen sind, schwerer zu ertragen, als Künstlern, die mit Walter Benjamin die Kunst selbstbewusst als „Magie, befreit von der Lüge, Wahrheit zu sein“ sehen können.

That neither science nor art will ever be able to completely explain the world is something that both have in common, just as they both share an irrationally passionate refusal to acknowledge this. It was and is, perhaps, merely harder for some scientists, who have succumbed to the illusion of rationality and truth, to endure the experience of failing to achieve this endeavor than for artists, who with Walter Benjamin are able to see art self-confidently as “magic, freed of the lie of being truth”.

Bei The Phage λ Simulacrum werden drei digitale Bilddateien mit einem speziellen Verfahren in DNA-Moleküle transkodiert und synthetisiert. Mit Hilfe des modifizierten Rekombinationssystems des Virus Bakteriophage Lambda (Phage λ) werden die in DNA-Moleküle umgewandelten Piktogramme in E. Coli-Bakterien neu zusammengesetzt. Bei dieser Bioreaktion entsteht eine neue Information, die wieder extrahiert, ausgelesen und in digitale Bilddateien rückübersetzt wird. In der Übersetzung und Darstellung werden Wahrnehmungsfelder jenseits des wissenschaftlichen Diskurses erreicht, da die Grammatik dieser Bilder nicht primär rational und ökonomisch zu sein hat. Dieser Prozess wird in einer interaktiven Installation präsentiert und für die BetrachterInnen ästhetisch erfahrbar gemacht.

The Phage λ Simulacrum project transcodes three digital image files into synthesized DNA molecules using a special procedure. These DNA molecules are re-composed inside E. coli bacteria with the help of the bacteriophage lambda virus’ (Phage λ) modified recombination system. After the bio-reaction the new information is extracted, sequenced and translated into digital image files again. The translation and depiction will reach fields of perception beyond the scientific discourse as their grammar does not need to be primarily rational and economic. This process is presented in an interactive installation, thus making it aesthetically perceptible for the viewer.

В проекте The Phage λ Simulacrum три графических файла в цифровом виде транскодируются и синтезируются с помощью специального метода в молекулы ДНК. Благодаря модифицированной системе рекомбинации вируса Bakteriophage Lambda (Phage λ) пиктограммы, преобразованные в ДНК – молекулы, составляются в бактерии E. Coli. Новая информация, возникшая в ходе этой биореакции, вновь экстрагируется, сортируется и переводится в графические файлы в цифровом виде. Этот процесс показан в интерактивной инсталляции и подан наблюдателям эстетически узнаваемо. В переводе и в изображении достигаются поля восприятия по ту сторону научного обсуждения, так как их грамматика не должна быть в первую очередь рациональной и экономичной.

Tree Chimera @ Paraflows 2013

In the context of the bio art club ‘Pavillon_35′ we deal with molecular biological processes within the scope of laboratory work on the one hand and also with their process of growth and the artistic involvement with these living materials. At the same time, we try to develop, discover, or re-discover methods and procedures.

‘Tree Chimera’ is dealing with the so-called process of ‘plant propagation’. By means of a technology called ‘grafting’, a tree chimera is produced from different plants. This creates an organism which is based on genetically different tissues.

The ‘grafting’ technique is usually used to ‘propagate’ aka. to improve or preserve an ‘exceptional’ plant variety but in the context of the ‘Tree Chimera’, we deploy it in a purely formal way.

Anima 1.0 @ Essence 2013

The apparatus ANIMA generates an animation out of 21 live yeast images. The yeast images were created by UV radiation. Areas that were not touched by the UV radiation where able to grow the white yeast. The yeast images are constantly changing they grow and rewrite themselves. Three cameras capture live the rotating petri dishes containing each image of the animation.

The operation of the machine is necessary for the visibility of the animation. The refrigeration slows down the transformation of the yeast images. Each frame was taken from a mobile phone video and shows a deceased friend of the artist.

Yeast microorganisms have a cell nucleus therefore their structure is much closer to higher beings than that of bacteria. Yeast is an important model organism for biological and biomedical research and has been at the disposal of research for centuries. One day Bioscience will create machines just as mechanics and the computer code have done. The boundaries between living organisms and machines will soon fade.
